Assembly Instructions
1. PREPARATION
The fireplace weighs 800kg in total. It doesn’t need a concrete pad but the ground does need to be firm so that it won’t sink under its own weight.
2. BASE
Set up the 3 base panels and make sure they are all level. Secure with nuts and washers but do not over tighten. Place large hearth slab on top (2-3 man lift) flush with the base at the back and overhanging at sides and the front.
3. FIRE BOX
Stand one back and one side panel and secure with bolt and washer so they support themselves. They should line up with the back of the hearth slab and have an even space on each side.
Next align the second back panel and secure with bolt and washer, then slide the second side panel into place and secure with the bolt and washer.
Secure the front panel with the opening of the fireplace to the sides with bolt & washers. This is a 2 man lift.
Insert the pumice panels at this stage if required. The small blocks and bar go in first, then the pumice liners.
4. THE TOP
Place the plain capping block in front then the chimney panel (this is a 2 man lift) then the back block with the chimney opening. Tap the two coach bolts through the holes provided in the back capping. This locks the top three panels together.
Plumb the chimney block up and lay the concrete blocks to the back of it. Grouting is preferable.
If you are fitting a copper (or steel) flue, the top block of the chimney is cut to allow it to fit inside. Pack the void between the block and flue with rubble and plaster (sand + cement 3:1), place copper collar around top of chimney and form a plaster cove on top of chimney to hold collar and flue.
5. FINAL TOUCHES
As you can’t control air movement around the fireplace, the best results are achieved with good dry firewood. Start the fire small and build up a good bed of embers, allowing the heat to help create a good draw up the chimney. Then, sit back and enjoy your new outdoor fireplace!
